Monster Madness

The thought of doing a Christmas post is weighing on me like a ton of bricks. I think I have to write about Christmas before I can write about anything else. Well, forget about it!! I'm not gonna write ANYTHING about Christmas and I'm not gonna share even ONE picture from December. Wow, that feels good!

Here's what I want to write about: MONSTER TRUCKS!!!!

One evening Than and I were watching TV and we saw a commercial for the monster truck show. Well, Aaron just loves his little cars and monster trucks so we thought that this would be a blast for him. Sara hates loud noises so we thought she would not be so happy about the adventure, but just maybe she would have some fun. So we bought some tickets and set out for our big day. We brought earplugs but we were still woefully unprepared for the level of loudness at this thing! Sara was scared at first and had to sit on my lap with earplugs in and my hands over her ears, but she really got into it.  She was cheering at the top of her lungs for her favorite truck, Rockstar.  Aaron loved it all! It was cool to see these big loud trucks smash cars and stuff. We had a really great time, but maybe this is an event to participate in once every 5 years? Every 10 years? We'll see. If we ever go again, we're gonna need those big earmuffs that they use at airports for the people who are outside with the planes.

November

November is always a busy month at our house with our anniversary, Sara's birthday and Thanksgiving. This year we celebrated 9 years of wedded bliss!!! Sometimes I am amazed that we have been married this long. These have been the most wonderful years of my life and I am so grateful for an amazing man who loves me despite all my crankiness and laziness. And he honestly NEVER complains! In addition to putting up with me, he is so loving, caring, and hard working. Gosh, I really lucked out!! To celebrate this year we stuffed ourselves silly at Red Lobster and then went to the mall to walk it off. It was perfect!

Sara turned 7 this year on her birthday. At our home we only do friend parties every 3 years and the 7th birthday is one of those years. We had our family over for her real birthday and then the friend party the next night. She got tons of stuff from the family. We splurged this year and got her an American Girl doll. She has been wanting one for a few years. We told her she couldn't get one until she was 8 so she was way surprised. She also got her first pet--a betta fish, clothes, some jewelery and toys.

And now for the friend party. Since we only do this every 3 years I thought I should go all out. You see, I'm not a great hostess and parties really stress me out so this is a big deal for me. She wanted a horse party so that's what we did. I made horse tails for all the girls to wear (all 13 girls!!!) out of yarn. We played stomp the fly and pin the tail on the donkey; we made pony wands out of painted dowels and silk flowers; we ate pizza and cupcakes, opened presents and finished with a cowgirl boot pinata. The girls were crazy loud and hyper but Sara had tons of fun and after it was over I locked myself in the bathroom and took a nice long hot bath.

 Here are the kids playing "stomp the fly". They each had a balloon tied to their ankles and had to try to stomp on eachothers balloons to pop them. It was wild and crazy and so fun!

Oh my sweet Sara. I just love this girl so much. I can't believe how she is growing into being a big kid. She is so happy and fun and a great helper.

Then there was Thanksgiving. We first went to Than's folks' house to say hi to Andy and have some pie because we were eating with my family later. But we ended up snacking on some turkey and potatoes and such. We hung out there for a few hours and then headed to my sister's house. We ate tons of yummy food and desserts and then we got to talk to my niece Jain who is in India for BYU study abroad. She has been gone since August so it was great to talk to her.

I know that lots of other things happened in November, but I have no idea what. Really, no idea.

Halloween

It's crazy, I know. I'm posting again. Already. I've been feeling pretty blah about blogging. Like, what's the point, anyway? But I guess posting the other day was actually FUN for me again, so I'm giving it another try.

This year for Halloween we went all out. We all tapped into our inner groovy and voila......

Sara was a disco girl and Aaron was a rockstar. He had a guitar with his costume, but he decided that it was too hard to carry that thing.

 Aaron got to dress up for his preschool this week and they had a little party. It looks like he had a great time.

Sara had her share of fun at school too. On Friday, there was the Halloween parade and then her class party.  After school, I took the kids to Aunt Emily's work for the Halloween party and trick-or-treat thing they have for the kids. Sara and Aaron got soooooo much candy there. They had a little sugar crash on the way home. 

Saturday night, we went REAL trick-or-treating. By "we" I mean Than and the kids while I stayed home and passed out candy. It was soooo rainy when they left, but soon it cleared up and they had a great time.

When they came home, I asked Aaron, "Now do you want to eat lots of candy and get a tummy ache and then go to bed? His answer: "YES!!!!!!" I have never heard him say "yes" so enthusicastically. I've come to the conclusion that this is what he must have heard: "Now do you want to eat lots of candy and blah blah blah and then blah blah blah?"

A long time ago school started ...

Waaaaaay back in August Sara started 1st grade!!!! When did she get so OLD? When did I get so old?

Sara wanted a pair of Sketchers "Twinkle Toes" shoes soooooo bad for months and months. I'm not one to normally fork over mega $$$$ for kids shoes, but this time we made an exception. She had been working on learning to tie her shoes for awhile, but wasn't really motivated. So we bribed her: "Learn how to tie your shoes by yourself all the time and then we'll buy you some twinkle toes." Now she knows how to tie them, but they have no laces. Silly us!!

 A few weeks later, Aaron started preschool. We are doing a sort of neighborhood, co-op preschool where we rotate who gets to teach and host the kids. He goes once a week and is loving it! The first time he cried when I left him and I felt HORRIBLE. But he stopped crying as soon as I left. Kids sure know how to make their parents feel bad.

Of course, he remembered that we took a picture of Sara's feet on her first day of school, and we HAD to get a picture of his shoes.

Summa, Summa, Summa, Summertime

I've been meaning to write this post for about a month, but I figure that it's still good to post this now before summer is officially over next week. However, I think summer ends with the first day of school, so I'm stretching it a little bit. In my mind this post would just be a slideshow of pictures with Will Smith's "Summertime" playing in the background. I'm not that computer savvy, though I know I could figure it out eventually, but then this post would be delayed even longer and it wouldn't even be September when I would get it posted.  So if you know the song, hum it to yourself as you read.  

Summer is about being hot and cooling off in the water. We did plenty of this. It seemed like every week we got to go swimming someplace. Sara and Aaron both got more confident in the water.  Aaron loves jumping off the side of the pool over and over again and Sara passed level 2 swimming lessons on her very first try.

Way back in June, Aaron turned 3. We had a little family party a few days before his birthday because we left for California on his actual birthday. He got lots of toy cars, which he LOVES. To this day, all he really plays with are his cars. He even sleeps with them. He also got two Zhu Zhu pets and he loves them almost as much as the cars. He named them Jim-Jim and Bob-Bob.  He cracks me up so much! Look at how he is loving his pet. That's Bob-Bob he's holding, by the way.

  

And then we went swimming some more.

Sara played T-ball with the city this year. It was fun to see her get so excited for this. One thing that I love about her is that she always wants to try new sports. I hated anything to do with sports when I was a kid, so I know she gets this from her dad.  Now she is doing gymnastics and wants to do basketball to. Busy girl!!

I couldn't write about summer without mentioning the 4th of July. We have a family tradition of holding a "war" during the day. We have a yummy lunch and stuff ourselves silly. Then we go outside and set up little green army guys and other small toys and use tanks and other fireworks to attack them. It is always a great time. Sara doesn't really like the noise, or the fire, or the smell so she usually watches from the window insead with her fingers in her ears. Aaron thought "The War" was cool. We haven't attempted to go someplace to watch the big fireworks at night because we know that Sara won't like it, but maybe someday....

What else did we do? We went swimming!

We went to Sun Valley, Idaho for a weekend in August. Than had a work conference there and we all got to go with. It was just the 4 of us and it was so fun. One day while he was in classes, Sara and I rented bikes and we peddled around the town with Aaron in a carrier behind me. We probably rode our bikes for 3 hours with just little breaks here and there. Sara thought it was the coolest thing. She loves to ride her bike at home, however, that's just a block to a friends house or around our street. In Idaho she rode for at least 5 miles. Another day we road a gondola thing up a mountain and had the most yummy lunch. I don't normally mention things like this but I had a lamb burger with melted brie cheese and carmelized onions on it. It was the best burger EVER! After lunch we rode the ski lift to the top of the mountain and walked around.  Maybe we are wimps because Than and I were totally scared riding up in the lift and petrified that our kids would fall off. Were the kids scared? No way!

While we were away having all our fun in Idaho, we got a new niece and cousin back at home. We were so sad we couldn't be there right away. When we finally got home, we went straight to Joe and Kariann's and met little Brooklyn.

Summer wasnt all fun and games. We had to work too. Sara learned the importance of having her own money and began to do extra chores to earn some. Aaron, of course, wanted in on the action too.

We didn't work terribly hard though. We planted a garden at the beginning of the summer and sometimes didn't check it as often as we should have. But a 2 foot long zucchini looks cool even if it doesn't taste the best.

And soon, school was about to start and we were busy buying supplies and clothes and going to 2 buck Tuesday at Thanksgiving Point. We had the most fun and busiest summer ever and we loved every minute of it!

California (with lots of photos)!

This summer has been one big vacation for us and I am loving it! A couple of weeks after we got back from St. George with Than's family, we headed off to Southern California with my family. We stayed in the most beaufiful house in San Clemente, just a few blocks from the beach. There was a pool and a hot tub and plenty of rooms which was great because at one time there were 19 of us sleeping in the house. Thanks again, Amy, for finding such a sweet place to stay and play!!

The ride down to Cali was a long one. Especially because we are old school and have no DVD players in the car. The kids did pretty good and just played with toys and sang songs and looked out the window and slept. Sara wanted me to take pictures of her in her seat acting all grumpy, but she was really just being silly. I promise. That's not to say there weren't grumpy moments during the drive, but I probably was the one being the grumpiest.

Once we got settled in at the house, we went to the beach. Since we were so close to the ocean, that's where we spent most of our time. Than tried his hand at boogie boarding, Aaron liked to play in the sand and be held in the water, Sara kept busy building sand castles and getting buried, and I loved sitting on the sand, soaking in that wonderful sun.

Of course, we went to Disneyland. We only spent a day and that was actually perfect. It turned out that we were there on one of the most busiest days of the year, but we still had a fantastic time. Well, Aaron kinda got sick a few times, but other than that, it was great. I didn't take too many pictures because we were too busy having fun.

Our other adventures included heading down to San Diego. We went to a cool aquarium and Balboa Park one day and then came back a few days later to go to Sea World. I think the kids actually liked Sea World better than Disneyland. We went to Sea World a few years back when Sara was 2 and she got really scared during the Shamu show. And she still remembers it. She was nervous this time before the show started but she was brave and and LOVED it! I mean, really loved it. The best moment for me from the entire vaction was when she looked at me at the end of the show and her face was beaming. She was so proud of herself for not being scared at all.

The rest of our time was spent hanging around the house, especially the pool. Well, the pool was really freezing so there was lots of hot tubbing. It really was the perfect kiddie pool. Sara loved to jump in off of the rocks and Aaron loved floating around in his life jacket. They are getting so much more daring in the water. I love it, but it scares me too.

We had so much fun in California. The night before we left I was so sad. I could have just lived in that house forever. It was so fun hanging out with everyone, staying up late talking and watching movies. I think I'm ready to go back. Who's with me?
